Historical Moment

In this competitive world, communication has become exceptionally important, especially for young generations who are going to face more daunting challenges in the future. This is why UCS Toastmasters Club is formed, to enable all the students in United College (Sarawak) to benefit from self-development in communication and leadership.

Before UCS Toastmasters Club is officially chartered, it was a Gavel Club. Gavel Club of United College (Sarawak) was set up after we were given a seminar on Toastmasters by the members of Sibu Toastmasters Club (7861-51). The initiator for the Gavel Club is Kenneth Sim, one of the College students. The members had their very first regualr meeting or educational meeting on 28th June 1997.

Soon after, the Committee Members of the Gavel Club agreed to transform the Club into UCS Toastmasters Club so that it could affiliate with Toastmasters International, an internationally respected and recognized educational organization. As the same time, all the members would be able to have unlimited opportunities for communication and leadership recognition based on their improved abilities and expanded experience.

After months of preparation and recruiting and with the helps from our Club sponsors, ATM-G John Sia and ATM-G James Chew, Club mentors, ATM-B Peter Lau and CTM Ching I Ling, UCS Toastmasters Club finally got itself chartered on 8th December 1997. TM Danny Bong was elected as the Charter President of the Club.

This historical event shows the members of UCS Toastmasters Club are taking their first step into a never-ending journey, mastering public speaking skills.
